Ethics are codes that every society expect it members to follow and practice them in order to be seen as socially fit. Every person needs to follow certain ethics in order to be called a leader. People believe that leaders are born, others also believe that leaders are made, I believe that leaders that are born are not leaders, but are successors or inheritors of positions they could not do anything to avoid. The recent death of the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, gave an opportunity for his son Kim Jong Un, to succeed him, but this does not make him a leader. He has to learn how to be a leader and practice the ethics of leadership.

Therefore, leadership ethics are the principles or patterns that a leader should exhibit in order to succeed in his or her (gender equality) leadership role. Every product made has a manual, if you want the full efficient use of the product you have to follow what the manual tells you, this is how leadership works. I would outline some few observable leadership ethics I have learnt as a result of the mistakes my student leaders have made. The focus of this article will be on student leadership, but it is also the same for the corporate world.

  • A leader is not suppose to be doing all the work while his followers sit idle doing nothing. Some student leaders I have seen prefer doing all the work giving him so he would be recognized as the leader. That is not the right procedure for receiving recognition; you are not working because you want to be seen, no! You work because it is your responsibility to do so. As a leader, you need to work with your followers and not alone; sometimes people should even find it difficult to identify you as the leader when working. You cannot do all the work, spread it out to your followers and take the part you think you can really do.
  • A leader should not be bossy! One thing that followers hate about is to be commanded to do something. If you want a follower to do something for you, you can say it in a very cordial way, but with authority. You don’t command the person as if you own him; you talk it over with him letting him suggest effective ways of completing the task. As a student leader, remember that every person under you has a choice to obey you or not because you don’t pay him for working for you.
  • Let your followers trust in their own capabilities. Some student leaders act as if everything depends on them and without them everything will not work out well. If you want to be a good leader, you have to believe in your followers’ skills and strength and encourage them that they can do it without you. When you are not around and things have already been organized or arranged, do not come and change them, let them be as they are! If you think there is something wrong with the organization or arrangement, correct it in a very humble way without causing any offence. Suggest to your followers that this is what you think about the arrangement, and wait for their consent.
  • A leader should be time conscious. This is one of the areas in which religious group leaders fail very much. They are not able to control the time of closing for events. Time is a very expensive resource that we always take for granted. A leader should be able to start programmes early and close on time, some leaders do not even care when prompted that their time is passed and that they need to round up quickly. If you want to be an excellent student leader, then respect the watch of your followers.
  • A leader should give equal attention to all followers. You  should not love others more than the others, it promotes division. If possible, try to be at peace with everybody. Let your love be unconditional, with no boundaries.
  • Learn to work under pressure. Some student leaders I have worked with usually offend almost all their followers when they are working under pressure, especially when there is an event going on. This attitude comes spontaneously, but remember to control yourself during that situation. Before the event starts, sit yourself down and find out how you are going to act and instruct with caution. Some student leaders go to the extent of insulting and shouting on their followers for the simple mistake they did.

  1. Hey that was a good one. I believe that leadership could sometimes be inherent however i think that would not be enough to be a good leader. Every leader should be innovative and not be resistant to change provided it is a good one. Leaders should also be ethical in their doings. A leader should be ethical and never compromise it for anything.

    As a Westerner, you can imagine how thrilled I am to see a Ghanaian Christian student leader directly addressing the time issue. Thank you! I realize there are structural and cultural reasons why Africans (in general) start and end meetings late. However, when we recognize that we are keeping others from being productive with their time (by starting late), then we realize that it is a matter of humility to insist that we all start and end on time. It shows respect for the others’ calling to be a productive servant of God.

    Having stated this, I acknowledge that Westerners like me often so strongly emphasize productivity (a big factor in Western wealth-building) that we have many times shown disrespect for people’s social needs (whereas, Ghanaians are masters are at showing great respect and honor, socially).

    Finding a balance between the productive and social needs of people means that we work hard to start and end meetings on time, but that we also acknowledge there are legitimate occasions when we must recognize social needs triumph needs for productivity (speaking to Westerners esp.).
